Week 2

During TWC session this week, we discussed about Technology, Society and Global Dominance as well as Technology and Human Development. I found that the topic dealing with Human Development seems more interesting as it has to do directly with myself as a human. Developments in this area could very well change the way that we live our lives. This reminds me of that show in which Bruce Willis acted in, "Surrogates". We could transfer our consciences into machines to lead our lives, in such a way that we are safe at home (from diseases and attacks) yet we are still out socializing and engaging in everyday activities.

An interesting thing to take away from this session is that technology is there and whether or not is is beneficial to us would be determined by how we use it. Many a times I blame facebook for not getting my work done, I blame the television for showing such good programmes. But if i actually take a step back and look, i'm the one who has to be blamed for not completing work that is supposed to be done.

Something that could be considered more is probably how technology has aid cultural dominance(for example the McDomination or Americanization). But as far as i'm concerned, i rather enjoyed the lesson and would give it a good 8:)

Week 1

This is a blog to document my experience on taking the module Technology and World Change.

Having attended the very first lesson and been briefed and introduced to TWC. I do not mean to exaggerate but it was rather eye-opening. The thing i remembered most vividly was the film on Guns, Germs and Steel. One might think that the many major changes that are occurring in the world had to do with complex phenomenon and reasons. However, according to American scientist Jared Mason Diamond, the changes can be simply explained with the emergence and proliferation of guns(used as weapons), germs(bacteria) and steel(machines).

I have had the chance to continue watching the film but only half way. I am rather amazed that the question as to why Americans have to much cargo(goods and material) while the New Guineans have so little, can be answered with geography. I have taken geography as an A level subject so i have some knowledge on the lands and climate as well as migrations. However with whatever i have learnt, i would have never been able to phantom explaining the difference in prosperity. I would have nonchalantly explained that the difference was because the Americans were just naturally endowed with so much resources and 'brains'.

View the world from the TWC aspect has sparked my interest as much can be again from having the knowledge/skill of knowing what is going to become popular, what is going to decrease or what is going to be forgotten and shadowed. I'm definitely looking forward to my next TWC lesson:)
